Terms of Use
These Terms of Use ("Terms") are an agreement between you and [Your full legal name or company name] ("we", "us"), the operator of Lumen, covering the Lumen website, web app and mobile apps (the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. Who can use Lumen
You must be at least 13 years old (or the higher minimum age in your country) and able to agree to these Terms. If you are under the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian must agree to them for you.
2. Your account
Keep your sign-in details to yourself and tell us if you think someone else has accessed your account. You are responsible for activity in your account. Give us accurate information, especially your email address, which we use to sign you in and send important notices.
3. The Service, the AI companion and "not advice"
Lumen offers daily prayers, guided audio prayers, Bible text, a journal and an AI companion. The companion and personal prayers are generated by artificial intelligence. AI can make mistakes, misunderstand you or say things that do not reflect your tradition. Bible verses are loaded from public-domain translations in our database, but the AI's own words may still be inaccurate.
We may change, add or remove features. Some features need an internet connection or a compatible device. We try to keep the Service available but do not promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free.
4. Premium subscriptions and free trials
Some features require a paid subscription ("Premium"). Current prices are shown before you buy (at the time of writing $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year in the US; local prices and taxes may differ).
- Free trial. If you start a free trial (7 days unless stated otherwise), your subscription starts automatically when the trial ends and you are charged unless you cancel before it ends. One trial per person. We email you before a web trial ends.
- Automatic renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period (monthly or yearly) at the then-current price until you cancel.
- Bought in the App Store: payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the end of the period. Manage or cancel in your device's Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Any unused part of a free trial is forfeited when you buy a subscription.
- Bought on our website: payments are processed by Stripe. Cancel any time from your account page or the link in our emails; you keep Premium until the end of the period you paid for.
- Refunds. App Store purchases are refunded by Apple under its policies (request at reportaproblem.apple.com). For web purchases, contact us within 14 days of a charge you did not intend and we will review it fairly. Nothing here limits refund rights you have under the law where you live.
- Price changes. We will tell you before a price change applies to your subscription, and you can cancel before it takes effect.
- One subscription, all platforms. Premium bought on the web or in the app works when you sign in with the same account elsewhere.
5. Your content
You own what you write in Lumen: prayers, intentions, notes and messages ("Your Content"). You give us a limited licence to store, process and display Your Content only to provide the Service to you, including sending it to our service providers as described in the Privacy Policy. We do not use Your Content for advertising and do not publish it. You can delete it at any time.
6. Acceptable use
Do not:
- break the law or use the Service to harass, threaten or harm anyone;
- try to make the companion produce harmful, hateful, sexual or illegal content, or get around its safety rules;
- access the Service by automated means, overload it, reverse engineer it, or resell it;
- interfere with other users or with the security of the Service.
We may limit, suspend or close accounts that break these rules.
7. Our content
The Service, including its design, illustrations, recorded and written prayers, software and the Lumen name, is owned by us or our licensors and protected by law. We give you a personal, non-transferable, revocable licence to use it for your own non-commercial use under these Terms. Bible translations we offer (such as the World English Bible, King James Version and Douay-Rheims) are in the public domain.
8. Other services
The Service relies on third-party services (such as app stores, payment providers and sign-in with Apple or Google) that have their own terms. We are not responsible for them.
9. Ending your use
You can stop using Lumen and delete your account at any time. Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store subscription: cancel it in your Apple settings. We may suspend or end your access if you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms, or if we stop offering the Service; if we stop the Service, we will give reasonable notice and refund any prepaid period you could not use, where required.
10. Disclaimers
To the extent the law allows, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, including fitness for a particular purpose and accuracy of AI-generated content. Some places do not allow these exclusions, so they may not apply to you.
11. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for loss of data or profits, arising from your use of the Service, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or US$50. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or your rights as a consumer.
12. Indemnity
To the extent the law allows, you agree to cover reasonable losses and costs we face because of your misuse of the Service or your breach of these Terms.
13. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of [State / country whose law governs the Terms, e.g. the State of Delaware, USA], without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Please contact us first so we can try to resolve any problem informally. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live and may bring claims in its courts.
14. Additional terms for the iOS app
If you downloaded Lumen from Apple's App Store, these Terms are the end-user licence agreement for the app, and:
- These Terms are between you and us only, not Apple. We, not Apple, are responsible for the app and its content.
- Your licence to the app is limited to using it on Apple-branded products you own or control, as permitted by the App Store usage rules.
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app.
- If the app fails to conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any) for the app; to the extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing claims relating to the app, including product liability claims, claims that it fails to meet legal or regulatory requirements, consumer protection claims, and claims that it infringes someone else's intellectual property.
- You confirm you are not located in a country subject to a US government embargo or designated as a "terrorist-supporting" country, and you are not on any US government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.
Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies to the extent these Terms do not cover something.
15. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. We will post the new version here with a new date, and tell you in advance by email or in the app if a change materially affects you. If you keep using the Service after a change takes effect, the new Terms apply.
